A parent visa is a pathway for individuals to join their children living in Australia. It offers various options catering to different needs: from permanent residency with no age restriction (Parent Visa 103), to temporary residence for 3-5 years (Sponsored Parent Visa 870), and options specifically tailored for those aged 67 and above (Subclass 804 Aged Parent visa, Contributory Aged Parent Visa 884/864). While some visas come with higher costs for faster processing (Contributory Parent Visa 173/143), others have longer processing times but no hefty Department fees (Subclass 804 Aged Parent visa). Each visa type serves a unique purpose, whether it's reuniting families, providing temporary support, or granting permanent residency.

Navigating the process of obtaining a parent visa in Australia involves various considerations, from understanding the costs associated with different visa subclasses like contributory parent visas to meeting health and character requirements. Applicants must carefully assess their eligibility and financial commitments, considering factors such as Assurance of Support and visa application charges. Additionally, the assurance of financial backing, whether through an individual or an organisation, plays a crucial role in visa applications. Throughout the process, applicants must ensure they provide accurate information and meet all necessary criteria to secure their desired visa, whether it be temporary or permanent residency, all while adhering to the guidelines provided by Australian migration agents or the Home Affairs department.

What are the visa application fees?

This fee represents the primary expense payable to the Australian Government upon submission of your application. The amount varies depending on the specific subclass of visa you are applying for.

Typically, applying for a parent visa will entail the following charges:

  1. Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870):
    • Visa Application Fee: $5,735 for up to 3 years; or $11,470 for up to 5 years
    • Payment Timeline: Pay $1,145 at the time of application, then pay $4,590 (for 3-year visa) or $10,325 (for 5-year visa) before the grant of visa.

Are there any other associated fees?

For permanent parent visas (subclass 103, 804, 143, and 864), an Assurance of Support is essential, signifying financial backing for the visa applicant(s). This commitment is formalised through a legal agreement between the assurer and the Australian government. Depending on whether the assurer is an individual or an organisation, and the specific visa subclass applied for, the amount of guarantee varies. Individuals assuring applicants for subclass 103 or 804 visas commit to $5,000 for one adult or $7,000 for two adults, while those assuring applicants for subclass 143 or 864 visas commit to $10,000 for one adult or $14,000 for two adults.

Medical examinations are mandatory for all applicants and incur costs of approximately $400 per adult and $350 per child. Biometrics, including fingerprints and photos, may also be required, with fees paid to Australian Biometric Collection Centres or their overseas counterparts. Police checks, necessary for individuals who have resided in a country for 12 months or more, incur separate fees payable to the relevant authorities. Additionally, if documents are not in English, translation services are required, with fees varying depending on the provider.

These fees are accurate as of July 1, 2023, but applicants are advised to verify the latest fee structures on the Australian Government's website or consult with an Australian Migration Agent for the most current information.
