How the Subclass 462 Differs from the Subclass 417

The Subclass 417 and Subclass 462 are available to different, non-overlapping lists of passport countries, so which one applies to you depends entirely on your nationality, not on which you'd prefer. The Subclass 462 also carries requirements the 417 does not: some 462 nationalities must show functional English, some must meet an education requirement, some need a government support letter from their home government, and high-demand nationalities such as China, India, and Vietnam are capped and selected through a ballot. What Does "Functional English" Mean for the 462 Visa?

Functional English is a lower bar than the "Competent English" standard used for many other Australian visas. Where a test is required, this is generally at a lower band score than the Competent English standard used for skilled and other visas.

Not every location outside a capital city counts as regional or Northern Australia for this purpose. The Department maintains a specific list of eligible postcodes and areas for specified work, and it does not always line up with how "regional" is used casually or by other visa programs. Before starting a job you're hoping will count toward a second or third visa, check that the specific location is on the Department's current eligible postcode list, since working in the wrong area will not count no matter how remote it feels.
